58. Classrules Rules

I love MacRatLove.  I love being able to put my crazy real life stories on paper.  I love when a silly little drawing makes me smile, and I love when other people tell me that my silly little drawing made them smile.  And usually I enjoy drawing the comics themselves, even if I hate the deadlines.

But there do come times where I just don’t feel like drawing.  Although some people might think it, creativity doesn’t have an on off switch.  When it comes, there’s no stopping it, and it spills out on post-it notes, index cards, anything I can get my hands on.  And sometimes it’ll go for days so that I forget to eat or sleep.  But other times it won’t come at all, and drawing becomes like pulling teeth, and I don’t like that.  I draw to get away from stress, not create it.

And I hate deadlines.  I really hate deadlines.  I’m just not the sort of person who can set aside a few hours everyday to work on something.  I’ve really tried setting myself schedules, or bribing myself (Just finish this panel and then you can have pie).  But it’s not working.  Or it’s working gradually.

I’m doing what I can.  I try my best to get my comics up on time.  But if it’s not happening, if it just becomes another thing I dread, I’m not going to force it.  And if that means missing an update or two, so be it.  I’m not going to make excuses.

Thank you for understanding.

That’s the horrid thing about pushing your imagination to meet a deadline. When the fun becomes work, you risk burning out. Then, what should have been fun risks being temporarily…or permantly abandoned.

I think your comic strip is delightfully whimsical. It shouldn’t be work. After all, you aren’t getting a paycheck for creating it.

I, for one, could never do a weekly comic strip. Just never have the time to stay on schedule. Tried a week long experiment with a short story; posting one page per day. Even that went from fun to work as the buffer zone ran out while doing research for the conclusion.

This s soo true!!! I han gout outside the mac lab at my school every morning, lunch and afterschool. We sit outside waiting for it to open yet every teacher and student will knock on the door, try to open it and then turn around and say… is it open or is the teacher here yet? i just want to look at them and say. oh no i just love sitting outside the lac lab where its hot rather than the air conditioned room with the computers, internet, and chairs…
